Our Commitment

James M. Benham is committed to making jamesbenham.com accessible to all visitors, including people with disabilities. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard and continually work to improve the accessibility of this site.

Measures We Have Taken

  • Semantic HTML with appropriate landmark roles (header, nav, main, footer)
  • All navigation menus labeled with aria-label and aria-controls attributes
  • Mobile navigation toggle includes aria-expanded state
  • All images include descriptive alt text or are marked decorative
  • All form inputs are associated with visible labels via for/id pairs
  • Interactive filter buttons include aria-pressed state
  • Color contrast ratios meet WCAG AA requirements for body text (≥4.5:1) and large text (≥3:1)
  • Interactive elements have minimum touch target sizes of 44×44px on mobile
  • Keyboard navigation supported throughout the site
  • Focus indicators visible for keyboard users
  • No content flashes more than three times per second
  • Page language declared via <html lang="en">
  • No session time limits or auto-expiring content
  • Responsive design that reflows for 400% text zoom without horizontal scrolling

Known Limitations

  • Interactive map (Speaking page): The Leaflet.js map of speaking engagements is a third-party component with limited keyboard accessibility. All engagement data is also available in the expandable text lists directly below the map.
  • Podcast audio: Podcast episodes are hosted on external platforms (Spotify, Apple Podcasts). Transcripts are available on the respective platform pages or by contacting us.
  • Press card images: Some older press feature cards use publication logo images sourced from third parties. We have added alt text descriptions to all card images.

Technical Specifications

This site is built with semantic HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript and does not rely on any single technology for accessibility. It is tested with modern browsers and screen reader combinations including VoiceOver (macOS/iOS) and NVDA (Windows).

If you are not satisfied with our response to your accessibility concern, you may contact the relevant regulatory authority in your jurisdiction. In the United States, you may file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.
