Cash is king.

Nothing beats cash on hand, especially in an economic disruption. Reserve at least two months worth of operating expenses in cash at all times.

Get out of, and stay out of debt.

Use debt as little as possible and pay it off as fast as possible. Debt payments can take a business down very quickly when revenue declines – don’t forget that leases are debt, too!

Build what you have to so you can build what you want to.

It will take time to build your dream business if you’re bootstrapping. Figure out the services and products you have to build that will earn revenue and cover expenses now, so that you can generate profit to build that dream later.

The number one rule of business is to survive.

Above all else you must stay in business long enough for good things to happen. This means making tough decisions that drive long-term viability of the business.

Choose your partners as carefully as you choose your spouse.

As an entrepreneur you will likely spend as much time, hours-wise, with your founding team as your family, especially in the early years. Choose your co-founder, founding team and partners slowly and wisely.

Get out and sell.

The Chief Executive is the Chief Spokesperson – get out, sell and expect to travel – no one else is going to build your dream for you. When all else fails, find a directory of companies, start calling them, then get on the road and go see them.

Be willing to rewrite your rules, but not your values.

Company values must be known by all, followed by all and used in every corner of the business; they should not be subject to ready change. Company rules, conversely, must be flexible enough to adapt to changing cultures, countries and innovation.

Make innovation a habit and a process.

Removing people from their everyday tasks and thought processes and adding a little incentive for innovation is powerful. From science fairs to hackathons, there is ample proof that intentional, organized innovation can result in new ideas, new inventions and especially new entrepreneurs.

You always get paid last.

As a bootstrapped founder, your compensation should always be second to the financials of the business. Pay yourself last, even if that means not getting paid at all.

Establish & communicate your personal minimums.

Over-communicate your company values and vision; your team will need to hear it over and over and ask questions before they remember and buy-in. But don’t expect to, or pretend to, have all the answers – trust yourself and your team to make the best decisions you can with the information you have.
