Vision Is a Muscle, Not a Lightning Bolt By James Benham Howdy! In today’s blog, I want to talk about one of the most overhyped ideas in entrepreneurship: That vision shows up like a lightning bolt. The myth goes like this: You have a late-night epiphany. The idea hits you out of nowhere. You scribble something on a napkin, build a prototype in a weekend, and boom, you have startup magic. This definitely makes for a good story. But that’s not how most great companies are actually built. The Best Vision Is Developed, Not Downloaded In all honesty, vision is less of a “moment” and more of a process. It gets shaped by feedback. Sharpened through failure. It is refined every time you explain it to someone who doesn’t get it. That napkin sketch might have been the seed, but the vision comes later. Through reps. Through listening. Through iteration. Your Idea Will Evolve… If You Let It When I look back at the businesses I’ve built, almost none of them look like the original idea. But the problem I was solving? That stayed the same. The core belief stayed the same. What actually changed was my approach, audience, and product. And that only happened because I gave myself permission to evolve the vision as I learned more. Inspiration Starts It. Discipline Shapes It. Having a clear vision has nothing to do with guessing right on day one. It’s about doing the work to get clearer every day. That means: Testing your assumptions in the real world Asking customers better questions Being open to uncomfortable answers Saying no to ideas that don’t align with the mission The founders I respect most didn’t “get struck” with a big idea; they trained for it over time, in public, and with feedback.
