Sticking to Company Values

By James Benham

Today, I want to talk about company values and the importance of defining who you are as a company.

I always say that if you can’t repeat it, you don’t believe it.

I’ve never been a believer in moral relativism. I don’t wake up every day deciding what my company values are that day based on how I feel. Letting your emotions dictate every decision you make does not work well in the real world.

Having values for your company and sticking to them is really important because otherwise, you’re just a leaf blowing in the wind.

If a business doesn’t have values, define them, talk about them, have people memorize them, and then be able to repeat them, they don’t believe it and they’re not going to use it.

Not having company values means you can be swayed by the latest presidential race, the latest economic news or what your competitors are saying. Don’t let your competitors dictate your decisions.

At my company, we are hardcore about our values. We hire people and fire people based on our values. We evaluate the team every quarter on our values.

At JBKnowledge, our company values are:

1. Do the right thing even when no one is looking.
2. Be self-motivated and resourceful.
3. Show respect to everyone and be a JBK ambassador 24/7.
4. Think lean.
5. Have each other’s backs.
6. Enjoy the ride and geek out.

If I’ve learned anything from EOS, it’s that sustainably great companies have values and stick to them. Setting a goal is not the key to success, it’s how you execute it daily and the values you have to help you get there.

Important Question to Ask Yourself This Week:

Does your company have values? If so, what are you doing to represent those values on a daily basis?
